New York City’s Architecture and Design Month

Archtober is New York City’s Architecture and Design Month, the fourth annual month-long festival of architecture activities, programs and exhibitions taking place during the month of October. Throughout the month will be special tours, lectures, and exhibitions that focus on the importance of architecture and design. The goal is to raise awareness of the important role of design in New York City and to gain international recognition of New York’s environment.

The “Building of the Day” celebrates contemporary and iconic architecture in New York City with daily on site tours, led by the architect. Here are a few buildings that you should see.

The Barbarian Group

The Barbarian Group, a new generation internet advertising agency, has a unique workspace design that challenges its employees creativity. The agency’s home is a 23,000 square foot loft in the Garment District that holds 125 employees and was renovated to create a large open space. The innovative plywood structure has grotto-like spaces that can accommodate meetings, provide a private workspace, and house bookshelves and other storage.

As a result of the September 11 attacks, the World Trade Center and World Financial Center were disconnected. The Pavilion at Brookfield Place is the new physical and symbolic link between Battery Park City’s Winter Garden and the newly completed Concourse that is part of the World Trade Center’s reconstruction. The Pavilion is a clear and open entrance that welcomes over 35,000 workers, residents, and tourists. The Pavilions curved steel columns design marks a gateway for public circulation in the reshaping of Lower Manhattan.

Completed in 2013, the 19,000 SF Red Bull Music Studios New York includes a full recording and production studio, event space, lecture room, gallery, bar, radio broadcasting studio, and lounges.

Campbell Sports Center

The Campbell Sports Center forms a new gateway to the Baker Athletics Complex, the primary athletics facility for Columbia University’s outdoor sports program. The facility houses strength and conditioning spaces, offices for varsity sports, theater-style meeting rooms, a hospitality suite and student study rooms. Designed by Steven Holl and Chris McVoy, the building aims at serving the mind, the body and the mind/body for aspiring scholar-athletes.

Starlight at the City Museum
Friday, October 31

Where: Cooper Joseph Studio 1220 Fifth Avenue, Manhattan

Starlight is a new attraction for the City Museum’s main entry space. It is a dazzling new light installation suspended above the Rotunda and accentuates its sweeping circular staircase. The 5,283 points of light complement the City Museum’s 1932 neo-Georgian home, reflecting its mission to connect the city’s past and present.
